It's my wish to share what I know about the simple gift of family. Family names include Nichols, Edmondson, Appleby, Reitzel, Smith, Richardon,Thompson, Crapson, Little, Barton,Mikel,South, and Free(Ferree) among others.

Simple Gifts

'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free,
'tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
It will be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed.
To turn, turn will be our delight,
'Til by turning, turning we come round right

From Thee I Came

As a young girl I loved to read books of families who lived long ago. As I grew older I started to appreciate the stories my parents told my sisters and me of our ancestors and came to realize that these were just like the stories I loved so much. The only difference was these were my stories because they were about my people. They were stories of pioneers who worked hard, moved from place to place, fought wars and did what it took to survive. So now I share with you some of the stories about these people.

Notes for ADAM REITZEL III:
Reitzel family history traces back to Westphalia, Germany, far up the Rhine River. Here, in the early 1700s, Johannes Adam Christian Reitzel was an army officer in the War of the Spanish Secession, and - in recognition of distingtuished service- was made a baron in 1722. The baron, known as Adam I, was the father of Adam II. The baron's grandson, Adam III, was a young child when his parents, Adam Reitzel II and Margaret Reitzel, set off on a voyage to America in 1755.
It is recorded in Reitzel family history that Adam had signed on as a crew member to pay for his family's passage to the New World. During an Atlantic storm, he was ordered to climb up the ship's rigging. Being an inexperienced seaman, he lost his balance and fell to his death in the sea.
Adam's widow and child were brought to port at Charleston, South Carolina, where Margaret Reitzel and her son were sold by the ship's captain at auction, as indentured servants, to pay the balance due on their passage. The ship's captain received his payment due of tobacco.
After Margaret Reitzel had completed her term as an indentured servant, she and her son started walking to join her relatives at Liberty, Guildford (Now Randolph County), North Carolina. It was a long, rough road and the child tired quickly. His mother carried him for a long way, then - weary and discouraged - she left the boy at the side of the road and continued on alone. However, she soon became conscience-stricken, turned back and got her son and finally they arrived at their frontier destination.
